The Animal Welfare Unit (UBA) of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA) organized an informational session for students in fifth and sixth grade, as well as high school level students at the Instituto Técnico Moralense (ITM) in Santa Bárbara, Morales, Izabal.

The session aimed to promote responsible pet ownership among students as a preventive measure against issues such as animal abandonment and stray animals. Thirty-one students participated and received information about the responsibilities involved in caring for pets and key concepts related to animal welfare.

During the event, students were encouraged to consider how their actions affect both their own pets and other animals in their community. Informational materials on the consequences of abandoning pets and proper practices for ensuring animal welfare were distributed.

UBA plans to coordinate additional educational sessions during the 2026 school year to further strengthen student understanding of animal welfare topics. According to UBA, "With these actions, UBA reaffirms its commitment to promoting educational initiatives in schools that contribute to the development of responsible, empathetic, and aware citizens from an early age."

The Ministry continues its efforts by engaging with young people through educational outreach on animal care.
