Guatemala took part in the election of the new Director General of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) during the Conference of Ministers of Agriculture of the Americas 2025, held in Brasília, Brazil. María Fernanda Rivera Dávila, Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Food, represented Guatemala at the 23rd Regular Meeting of the Inter-American Board of Agriculture (JIA), which is IICA’s highest governing body.

The JIA convenes every two years and brings together top agricultural authorities from IICA member countries to set hemispheric priorities for agriculture and elect the Director General. This year, Dr. Muhammad Ibrahim from Guyana was elected to lead IICA for the 2026-2030 term, succeeding Manuel Otero. According to officials, Otero’s tenure focused on boosting productivity, technology, and innovation. Ibrahim will assume his duties on January 15, 2026.

Guatemala continues its close collaboration with IICA, working jointly on innovation, technology transfer, management of agroclimatic risks, and strengthening producer capacities.

"The participation of Minister Rivera reiterates Guatemala's commitment to strengthening technical cooperation and sustainable development in the agricultural sector," stated officials.
