During epidemiological week 43, from October 19 to 25, 2025, authorities in Guatemala carried out a series of measures aimed at monitoring and controlling the Screwworm parasite across several regions.
In this period, technical teams inspected 7,682 animals in 352 production units. Preventive treatment was administered to 2,287 animals. Authorities also responded to 117 reports related to potential cases and trained 322 individuals on how to identify and manage the parasite.
Operations were focused on strategic livestock movement control points, particularly in the departments of Izabal, Suchitepéquez, Santa Rosa, Quiché, and Guatemala. These areas reported the highest number of cases. Nationally, there were 45 new suspected cases during the week under review. The cumulative total for the year reached 2,921 suspected cases.
These efforts are part of ongoing surveillance designed to limit the spread of the parasite and protect national livestock health.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA), through its Vice Ministry of Agricultural Health and Regulations (VISAR) and the Directorate of Animal Health, emphasized its dedication: "The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA), through the Vice Ministry of Agricultural Health and Regulations (VISAR) and the Directorate of Animal Health, reaffirms its commitment to prevention, early detection and timely attention to diseases that affect livestock production in the country."
MAGA encouraged producers to report any suspected outbreaks using its official application https://www.maga.gob.gt/aplicacion-dsa/ or via WhatsApp at 3570-7727 for immediate technical assistance.
