Children in rural schools in San Marcos are learning about teamwork, healthy eating, and environmental care through school gardens. The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA), via its Urban Agriculture Department (DAU), has provided technical assistance and ongoing support to these educational gardens. This year, the initiative was implemented at several schools: Fermín Colima Official Rural Mixed School in El Triunfo village; Cantón Primavera in Ayutla; and Barrel Grande Hamlet in San Cristóbal Cucho.

During the sessions, efforts focused on improving crop growth conditions and reducing pests. Teachers and students also received reinforcement of their agricultural knowledge.

Students took part in field activities such as plant care, responsible water use, and identifying beneficial and harmful insects. They engaged in watering, cleaning, and observing plant development to strengthen their learning through hands-on practice.

“These experiences allow children to understand the importance of agriculture and develop values such as responsibility, teamwork, and respect for nature,” according to MAGA staff.

“These activities not only strengthen practical teaching in the classroom but also encourage good agricultural practices and promote comprehensive education, where gardens become living spaces for learning, sharing, and sowing the future,” MAGA stated.
