The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA), through its Animal Welfare Unit (UBA), has issued recommendations to help pet owners protect their animals during the cold season.

According to MAGA, current weather conditions can negatively affect animal health. The ministry notes that a drop in temperature may lead to respiratory illnesses and other health issues, especially for young animals, older pets, or those with short fur. MAGA recommends keeping pets in places sheltered from wind, rain, or humidity and ensuring they have a clean, dry shelter that is insulated from the ground.

Preventive measures suggested by UBA include keeping pets indoors as much as possible to shield them from low temperatures. Owners are also advised to reduce the frequency of baths during colder months since natural oils in animal fur help retain body heat and provide protection against sudden temperature changes. Providing nutritious food with adequate protein and energy content is encouraged to help animals maintain their body temperature.

It is important for pet owners to ensure their animals have constant access to fresh water and prevent it from becoming too cold. Additionally, any behavioral changes such as lethargy or loss of appetite should prompt immediate veterinary attention.

UBA also advises scheduling walks and physical activity during the warmest parts of the day so that pets remain active and healthy.

"The UBA makes a call on the population to care for and protect their animals during this cold season. With these actions, it is ensured that pets are protected and healthy at all times," stated MAGA’s release.

The ministry emphasizes that these precautions will contribute to safeguarding pet health throughout the colder period.
