A nutrition and learning event was held in Olopa, Chiquimula, to mark World Food Day. The gathering brought together 16 mothers of children experiencing acute malnutrition. The event was organized through a collaboration between the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA), the Ministry of Social Development (MIDES), the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance (MSPAS), the Secretariat for Food and Nutritional Security (SESAN), and the Municipality of Olopa.
One notable part of the day featured a nutritionist from the Nutrition-Sensitive Agriculture component of the Vice Ministry for Food and Nutritional Security (VISAN). The specialist provided practical advice to mothers on how to use and make the most out of foods distributed as part of food assistance programs.
The professional explained methods for preparing nutritious and balanced recipes aimed at helping children gain weight and grow taller. Informational pamphlets with simple recipes were distributed so families could easily replicate them at home.
Additional topics addressed during the session included hygiene practices when preparing food, highlighted by SESAN; guidance on proper use of family bonus funds from MIDES; and MSPAS's emphasis on maintaining a varied diet using healthy foods available within local communities.
At the end of the activity, each mother received a bag containing sugar, Incaparina, spaghetti, rice, corn, beans, and oats. Participants also tasted banana pancakes made with Incaparina as an example that nutritious meals can be accessible as well as healthy.
