A recent epidemiological surveillance campaign was carried out in Wiscoyol 2, Iztapa, Escuintla, to improve the health and welfare of backyard pigs. The initiative was led by staff from the National Swine Health Program (PRONASPORC) and the Animal Health Directorate of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA).
During the event, sanitary inspections were conducted along with the administration of vitamins and dewormers. Producers also received training on how to prevent Screwworm infestation and on early reporting of unusual swine diseases.
The campaign directly benefited 22 producer families. A total of 133 pigs were monitored and given vitamins, while 118 received deworming treatment. These measures are intended to strengthen the animals’ immune systems and enhance pig productivity in the community.
Support was provided by an extension agent from the departmental office in Iztapa as part of efforts to reinforce epidemiological surveillance and health education locally. The activity highlighted the importance of avoiding practices that could cause wounds or infections, such as using tight ropes around pigs’ necks. Local residents expressed appreciation for the technical visit, noting the usefulness of advice given and personalized attention for each family.
According to MAGA, "With this type of intervention, MAGA reaffirms its commitment to animal health, disease prevention, and strengthening family pig production in rural communities."
