The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA) has implemented several initiatives in Quetzaltenango to improve food security and nutrition in rural communities. Through the Municipal Rural Extension Agency (AMER) in San Juan Ostuncalco, MAGA organized activities with local residents.
One of the main events was an informational fair to mark World Food Day. The event aimed to promote nutrition among youth groups, community promoters, and families in the region. During the fair, community promoters had the opportunity to sell products from family gardens to support the local economy.
In Toj Coral village, Concepción Chiquirichapa municipality, members of the Centers for Learning for Rural Development (CADER) received training on preparing nutritious foods such as Incaparina pancakes with spinach. The training highlighted the nutritional value of the recipe to improve family diets, especially for children under five years old.
A similar training session was held in Tuitzisbil village, also in Concepción Chiquirichapa. This session focused on making pancakes with Nutriniños, using foods provided by the health department to help prevent malnutrition.
Healthy eating was also promoted in the San Marcos neighborhood through a session on the Nutritional Pot. In Curruchique community, Salcajá municipality, instruction was given on food security and nutrition using agricultural and backyard production.
As part of these efforts, physical and financial reports were prepared and coordination took place with community promoters in Salcajá under the Rural Home component.
