María Fernanda Rivera Dávila, Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Food of Guatemala, met with officials from the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products (AEMPS) on October 23. The meeting included Consuelo Rubio, head of the Department of Veterinary Medicines; Cristina Muñoz, coordinator of the National Plan for Antibiotic Resistance; and Carmen Sánchez, technical advisor in the same department.
During their discussions, both parties considered options to promote technical cooperation and training programs related to antibiotic resistance, rational use of veterinary medicines, sanitary registration processes, and measuring residual effects in animal products.
Spanish authorities shared their experiences and positive outcomes from programs that control and register the use of antibiotics and veterinary medicines. These efforts have led to a significant reduction in the use of such products in animals intended for human consumption as well as companion animals. As a result, they reported improvements in competitiveness and sustainability within the livestock sector.
Rivera Dávila stated Guatemala’s interest in strengthening cooperation with Spain in this area. She said: "The aim is to modernize veterinary control systems, promote responsible use of antimicrobials and ensure food safety and public health." According to Rivera Dávila, this meeting represents an important step toward implementing joint policies that support safer and more sustainable agricultural practices.
