Guatemala's Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Food, María Fernanda Rivera Dávila, met with senior officials of the Spanish Navy to seek support for the development of the country's fishing sector. The meeting took place at the Spanish Navy General Staff headquarters.
Rivera Dávila held discussions with Admiral Gonzalo Sanz Alisedo, Deputy Chief of the Navy General Staff; Vice Admiral Ignacio Paz García, Admiral of the Plans Division; Colonel David Rodríguez Picallo, Head of Foreign Relations; and Corvette Captain Felipe Areal Fernández, officer in the Foreign Relations section.
According to a statement from the ministry, "During the meeting with senior commanders of the Navy, support was sought for technical training processes, industrialization and strengthening of Guatemala's fishing industry, as well as opportunities for cultural and technical exchange." The talks were attended by Spain's ambassador to Guatemala, Clara Girbau Ronda, and Guatemala's ambassador to Spain, Jorge Skinner-Klee.
The parties also discussed a possible visit to Guatemala by an international training ship from the Spanish Navy. The vessel would be similar to the Juan Sebastián de Elcano, which is considered Spain's maritime ambassador.
