Families in the municipalities of Teculután, Estanzuela, Zacapa, and Gualán have received food aid and seeds for family gardens from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA). This support targets households with children experiencing acute malnutrition as part of efforts to improve food security and nutrition.
The distribution took place from October 20 to 24. In addition to food kits, families were provided with seed packages including cilantro, radish, onion, and zucchini. The initiative aims to strengthen family agriculture and promote fresh food production within homes.
During the event, Marco Mejía and Alberto Paz, field technicians from the Directorate for Community Food Production Support under the Vice Ministry of Food Security and Nutrition (VISAN), offered brief explanations on planting techniques both in soil and containers. They also explained harvest times for each crop.
Angelina Nájera, a nutritionist from the Nutrition-Sensitive Agriculture component, advised families on how to combine distributed foods with produce from their gardens. She said this would "strengthen the quality and variety of their daily diet."
A representative from the Municipal Rural Extension Agency stated that ongoing support will be provided: "He indicated that he will follow up on the development of family gardens to ensure that families continue with good planting practices and healthy consumption."
