A total of 303 artisanal fishers from the Cañón del Río area in Livingston have received identification cards certifying their registration with the Directorate for Fisheries and Aquaculture Regulation (DISPESCA). The registration took place during an event held on November 10, organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA) through the Vice Ministry of Agricultural Health and Regulations (VISAR) and DISPESCA.
The event aimed to encourage responsible fishing practices and regulate the fishing sector in Guatemala’s Caribbean region. It was supported by the Ak’ Tenamit Association and the Municipality of Livingston. Representatives from several communities, including Barra Lámpara, Torno La Virgen, Langostura, Cañón del Río, La Pintada, and Río Bonito participated.
The newly issued identification cards certify each fisher’s involvement in artisanal fishing and help facilitate their inclusion in national registries. However, these cards do not serve as fishing permits. Fishers must still complete a separate process regulated by DISPESCA to obtain official licenses.
According to MAGA, these measures are intended to strengthen sustainable management of fisheries resources, promote formalization within artisanal workforces, and support community well-being in Izabal.
