As part of ongoing efforts under the COINCON framework, Werner Ovalle Ramírez, Superintendent at the Superintendencia de Administración Tributaria (SAT), together with Waleska Sterkel, Executive Director of AmCham, and Diana Benavides, Registrar of Intellectual Property, presented recent progress in brand protection and the fight against counterfeiting.
During the event, Ovalle reported that from 2019 to June 2025, the tax administration detected 305 cases of intellectual property violations. These cases represent a customs value of Q83.75 million in goods such as medicines, footwear, clothing, cosmetics, and fragrances. He also noted that through participation in various regional operations and new partnerships like the recently signed agreement with CBP, Guatemala is strengthening its capacity for information exchange, intelligence gathering, controls, and risk management.
Ovalle stated: "With these actions, SAT reaffirms its commitment to continue working under the public-private collaboration model. This approach has allowed us to address USTR recommendations directly while strengthening national competitiveness and providing guarantees for health protection, safety, and intellectual property rights to combat unfair competition affecting Guatemalans."
