On April 18, 2023, the Guatemalan Institute of Tourism (INGUAT) joined other government institutions in honoring Dr. John C. Maxwell for his work as a writer and international speaker. Maxwell has been recognized for his professional achievements and influence as a leader in various sectors.

This recognition marks the tenth anniversary of Maxwell's involvement in projects that have promoted leadership values among thousands of Guatemalans. His ongoing engagement with Guatemala and efforts to promote the country's tourism attractions led to him becoming the first foreigner to receive this distinction.

The award presented by INGUAT was a representation of a Chinchin from Rabinal, Baja Verapaz, crafted by artist David Ordóñez. According to INGUAT, it symbolizes "the heraldic spirit needed to tell the world about Guatemala’s landscapes, people, and tourism."
