Given the health emergency generated by Covid-19, Cerro de Hula, the largest wind farm of its kind in Central America, benefits the surrounding population with the delivery of food bags, as part of its sustainable social development strategy.

Francisco Morazán, Honduras, June 2020. The Cerro de Hula Wind Farm, belonging to the Energy Unit of Corporación Multi Inversiones –CMI–, made a donation of food, in order to support more than 300 families, 18 communities, located between the municipalities of Santa Ana and San Buenaventura, in view of the situation caused by COVID-19 that affects thousands of people in Honduras and the world.

As part of the community, the wind farm can identify the needs and priorities of its inhabitants, allowing them to support, through the implementation of different social programs, that are aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals –ODS– that the United Nations dictates.

School Lunch is one of the programs of the Sustainable Social Development Strategy contemplated by Cerro de Hula, which has been operating for five years, promoting healthy eating and personal development of students from 18 neighboring communities, with lunches during the 5 days of the school week.

Due to the health emergency, classes were suspended across the country and the program was modified to continue supporting the families of these children.

In this sense, with an investment of approximately 136,500 lempiras (USD $ 5,460), the wind farm delivered bags with food from the basic basket that will contribute to the nutrition and food of these students and their respective families.

"It is important to contribute to the feeding of families in this time that we are living and although there are no face-to-face classes at the moment, for Cerro de Hula it is vital to continue contributing with the quality education of children, which is also based on good nutrition, thereby promoting sustainable development and strengthening the body, "says Rudy Hernández, Coordinator of Environment and Social Management of Cerro de Hula Wind Farm.

Currently, the country is undergoing a health emergency that calls all Hondurans to work together to cope with this situation and for this reason, the food distribution carried out will benefit 301 families of 417 students who belong to 18 communities in the area of influence.

The contribution provided consists of a family bag, with an approximate cost of 500 lempiras each, which includes: 5 pounds of red beans, 5 pounds of rice, 5 pounds of sugar, 3 pounds of corn flour, 2 pounds of flour wheat, 2 pounds of spaghetti, cookie packet, salt, oil, tomato sauces, laundry soap, and 4 rolls of toilet paper.

In Honduras, renewable energies play an important role for the benefit of communities, both for the economic impact they produce, and for the amount of social and environmental contributions they develop in their environment.

With 63 wind turbines and the capacity to supply up to 126MW of power, Cerro de Hula, in addition to generating clean energy and ensuring the well-being of communities, also drives social sustainability.

While generating clean energy to guarantee the electricity supply in Honduras, the company reiterates its commitment to the country to give continuity to the electricity system that is of vital importance in this situation and from which the stable operation of the health system derives, the food production plants, telephony and the media; supporting economic continuity and the unity of society.
