Corporacion Multi Inversiones issued the following announcement on Oct. 22.
Located in the municipality of San Pedro Carchá, Alta Verapaz, Renace is an important project for Guatemala for more than 25 years that represents 16% of the country's energy. It is the only company in the region with three international certifications that support its environmentally friendly processes and its contribution to the families of 29 Maya Q'eqchi´ communities.
The Renace project arises with the vision of becoming a world-class organization, with the highest standards of the electricity generation industry in its operations, participating significantly in the Central American market.
Renace obtained its legal authorization between 1991 and 1994. All the plants are cascading over 21 kilometers of the river, adding 301 MW of pure, clean and renewable energy.
This represents a contribution of 16 percent to the National Electrification System, currently composed of 60 percent renewable energy and 40 percent thermal energy. The processes adopted are committed to the conservation of the environment, the development of the communities and the responsibility towards the workers, so Renace is backed by three certifications:
ISO 9001, 2015: Guarantees standardized quality processes that ensure compliance with customer expectations.
ISO 14001, 2015: Watch over the care and improvement of the environment.
OHSAS 18000, 2007: Certifies compliance with occupational health and safety through programs for the protection and reduction of injuries or damage to the health of all employees of the organization.
Respectful towards the environment
Renace has a pyramid strategy designed for the protection, conservation and recovery of the environment in Alta Verapaz, complying with legal requirements and the implementation of best practices.
As part of this, the final opinions of the audits carried out by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources have been zero findings regarding failures, demonstrating the success of the measurement of environmental indicators and programs developed by the staff.
It is worth noting that for the operation of the hydroelectric power plant it is necessary to remove the wastes found in the rivers, which cannot pass through the turbines in the power generation process. In this way, Renace annually extracts about 10 tons of solid waste that would end up in Lake Izabal.
In addition, in compliance with the provisions of the General Electricity Law, Renace maintains an ecological flow that is intended for use in communities and the conservation of biodiversity in the area. This ecological flow exceeds the legal requirement by 260 percent.
Another of the benefits of environmentally friendly energy generation by this hydroelectric plant is the natural reduction of 128,000 tons of carbon dioxide.
Committed to people
People are the most important part for Renace, that's why seven sustainable social development programs were designed in the last seven years. With them it has been possible to reduce chronic malnutrition by 32 percent in children under five in the area and 46 percent in teenage pregnancies. The increase in school re-enrollment in Primary and Secondary education is estimated at 15 percent.
Other initiatives include the construction and maintenance of 93 kilometers of roads, favoring local enterprises, as well as generating 15,000 temporary and rotating jobs.
In this way, Renace has benefited and improved the living conditions of 21,000 people in 29 Maya q'eqchi communities that live in San Pedro Carchá.
