CORPORACION MULTI INVERSIONES: More than 800 trained women impact on reducing chronic malnutrition in San Cristóbal Totonicapán

Corporacion Multi Inversiones issued the following announcement on Aug. 21.

The Juan Bautista Gutiérrez Foundation, social arm of the Multi Investment Corporation (CMI), celebrated the culmination of the second phase of the Community Nutrition and Entrepreneurship program (2017-2019) in San Cristóbal, Totonicapán where more than 500 women from the 3 axes graduated of the program

The first axis is oriented to training in issues of Food and Nutrition Security, managing to influence chronic malnutrition in children aged 0 to 12 months in 46%.

The second axis provides access to nutritious food to the communities, where more than 80 thousand pounds of fortified flour were delivered, with the support of Molinos Modernos one of the CMI companies. A Mer-K-dito Express, 4 Casas del Pollo, 23 Rincones del Pollo, with the support of CMI's Livestock Industry, was also implemented, and more than 157,000 pounds of meat products were given access to the communities, generating more than Q215 thousand of utility for the 30 new entrepreneurs, where the business approach moves to a social approach.

The third axis, which promotes the economic self-sustainability of women, managed to create 76 new entrepreneurs, linked to export chains to the United States, China and Europe, increasing the income of women by 200% through strategic alliances.

Totonicapán is one of the 7 prioritized departments to combat chronic malnutrition in Guatemala and has 70% chronic malnutrition in children under 5 years old, according to the National Survey of Maternal and Child Health (ENSMI 2014-2015). The municipality of San Cristóbal Totonicapán has 9 populated centers: The Center of San Cristóbal, the New Candelaria Village and 7 cantons: Patachaj, Pacanac, Chuicotom, Xetacabaj, Xésuc, Xecanchavox and San Ramón, according to the Plan of

Development of San Cristóbal Totonicapán and the Juan Bautista Gutiérrez Foundation has attended 6 of these.

“We are generating a generational impact, promoting a new way of doing things in Guatemalan communities, following the principles of Food and Nutrition Security, through the transformation of families, mainly forming women of childbearing age, pregnant women, during breastfeeding, through the incorporation of new practices, weight and height monitoring to children between 0 and 5 years; bringing nutritious food to communities and providing opportunities to generate income and create self-sustainable communities. The program is preventive and seeks to have incidence to reduce the current rates of chronic malnutrition, through theaccompaniment and monitoring of the whole process ”, explained Cristina Diaz, Executive Director of the Juan Bautista Gutiérrez Foundation.
