The Universidad Mesoamericana in Guatemala has released a critical edition of the Memorial de Sololá, an important historical document for understanding the history and identity of Indigenous peoples in the region. The publication was produced by Guatemalan anthropologist and linguist Dr. Sergio Francisco Romero Florián and is part of the university's Publicaciones Mesoamericanas imprint. This release marks the eighth volume in the Colección Estudios Mesoamericanos, which focuses on disseminating historical and cultural knowledge about Mesoamerica.
The Memorial de Sololá is a transcription and annotated translation of an original manuscript written in Kaqchikel. The manuscript is held in the Berendt-Brinton Linguistic Collection at the University of Pennsylvania Library in the United States. The new edition from Universidad Mesoamericana features a critical translation with an innovative reading system that allows readers to view the original folio, a contemporary transcription, and a Spanish translation side by side, along with linguistic notes and historical analysis.
At the launch event, Rector Rómulo Gallegos Alvarado emphasized: "the value of this work as an essential testimony for reconstructing the Mesoamerican past and the importance of its publication in Guatemala." Copies of the book were distributed to various institutions as part of efforts to promote access to knowledge and preserve Guatemala’s cultural heritage.
Through this publication, Universidad Mesoamericana continues its commitment to research and dissemination of ancient texts, highlighting how studying historical documents contributes to shaping Guatemalan identity.
