Guatemala marked World Fisheries Day on November 21 by highlighting the role of fishing in food security and supporting thousands of families across the country.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA) outlined recent progress in promoting responsible fishing practices and conserving aquatic resources. These efforts are led by the Vice Ministry of Agricultural Health and Regulations, along with the Directorate for Fisheries and Aquaculture Regulation (DIPESCA).

Authorities reported that fisheries management has been strengthened through responsible practices and technical studies to better understand marine populations. The government is also working with both artisanal and industrial fishers to improve local governance and ensure sustainable use of marine ecosystems.

The Department of Maritime Fisheries emphasized the essential contribution of artisanal and industrial fishers, noting their dependence on this activity. The department called for reflection on the state of oceans and marine ecosystems, stressing that conservation is crucial for the well-being of many families.

MAGA reiterated its commitment to collaborate with the fishing sector, civil society, and international partners to achieve legal, orderly, and sustainable fisheries. The ministry stated: “For responsible fishing and an ocean full of life.”
