A scientific fishing survey was conducted on November 19 at Lake Petén Itzá in the Petén region. The activity aimed to identify the current composition of fish species in the lake and was organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA).
Technical staff from the Directorate for Fisheries and Aquaculture Regulation (DISPESCA), part of the Vice Ministry of Agricultural Health and Regulations (VISAR), carried out the sampling. They were assisted by Cruz Chi, a fisherman from San Benito, who helped with water transport.
During the survey, specimens of white fish (Petenia splendida) and red mojarra (Vieja melanurus) were collected. These samples will undergo morphological and taxonomic studies.
According to MAGA, "By processing these results, it will be possible to update biological information about the lake and support technical decisions for conservation and responsible management of its fishery resources."
The initiative is expected to contribute updated data that can inform future conservation strategies for Lake Petén Itzá’s aquatic ecosystem.
