Guatemala’s Ministry of Energy and Mines, led by Minister Víctor Hugo Ventura, has highlighted the country’s recent leadership role in renewable energy initiatives through a series of social media updates. The posts, published between November 15 and 17, 2025, outline Guatemala’s new responsibilities within regional and international organizations dedicated to advancing renewable energy goals.
On November 15, 2025, the Ministry announced that Guatemala had assumed the presidency of RELAC (Renewable Energy for Latin America and the Caribbean), stating: "Guatemala tomó la presidencia de #RELAC por parte del ministro Víctor Hugo Ventura. El gobierno alemán se compromete a entregar 3 millones de euros para la iniciativa y 12 millones más para proyectos, con el fin de llegar a 80% de #EnergíaRenovable para los países #RELAC #COP30". The post also noted financial commitments from the German government totaling €15 million—€3 million for RELAC itself and an additional €12 million for related projects—with the objective of achieving an 80% share of renewable energy among participating countries.
Continuing its engagement at COP30 in Belém, on November 17, 2025, the Ministry reported: "En la continuidad de su participación en la #COP30, Belém, el ministro Víctor Hugo Ventura participó en una reunión de la Red de Políticas de Energías Renovables para el Siglo XXI #REN21". This meeting took place within the framework of REN21 (Renewable Energy Policy Network for the 21st Century), an international multi-stakeholder network focused on policy development for renewable energy.
A subsequent update from the same day detailed topics discussed during these sessions: "Se trataron estos temas: Revisión al plan indicativo de generación, intercambio de experiencias para la politica energética y licitaciones de generación por tipo de tecnología. #REN21".
Guatemala’s participation in these forums reflects broader efforts across Latin America and globally to expand renewable energy capacity. COP30 refers to the United Nations Climate Change Conference held annually to negotiate climate action measures. RELAC is a regional initiative aiming to increase renewables’ share in electricity generation across Latin America and the Caribbean. Germany has historically supported international climate initiatives with financial contributions aimed at boosting clean energy transitions.
The Ministry of Energy and Mines oversees national policies on resource management and represents Guatemala in international dialogues on sustainable development.
