Online shopping provides convenience, but it also exposes consumers to potential fraud. Banco G&T Continental has issued guidance to help its cardholders shop safely and avoid scams.
According to the bank, scammers often use fake online stores that appear legitimate but deliver substandard products or nothing at all. Some websites advertise deals that seem too good to be true, prompting users to provide financial information on insecure platforms. Phishing attempts through emails or social media messages are also common; these mimic reputable retailers and ask for card details or passwords. In some cases, unauthorized charges appear after a legitimate purchase, or consumers receive counterfeit goods advertised as genuine brands.
Banco G&T Continental recommends several steps for safer online transactions. "Check that the website address starts with https://," the bank advises, encouraging users to look for user reviews before making purchases. The bank further warns: "Be wary of products with excessively low prices. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is."
The institution urges customers never to enter card information on unknown sites or links received through unsolicited emails. It suggests using digital cards or payment intermediaries like Google Pay or Apple Pay for extra security.
Customers are encouraged to activate transaction alerts in the GTCApp for instant notifications about each purchase and to review account statements regularly for any unrecognized charges. Any suspicious activity should be reported immediately.
"Remember, safe shopping starts with responsible habits and caution. By following these recommendations, you can enjoy the convenience of e-commerce without worrying about data theft," Banco G&T Continental stated.
