The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA) has started distributing free food rations to families facing food insecurity in the municipality of Momostenango, located in the department of Totonicapán. According to MAGA, a total of 7,262 households will receive this assistance.

The distribution is being carried out in phases due to the large number of prioritized families. This approach aims to ensure an orderly and timely process. The initiative is part of an inter-institutional commitment to guarantee the human right to food, with a focus on supporting the most vulnerable populations.

Each food ration contains rice, beans, vegetable oil, nixtamalized corn flour, oats, sugar and a fortified blend of corn and soy flour. These products were chosen for their nutritional value and contribution to a balanced diet.

Staff from the Office of the Comptroller General are present during the delivery process to verify transparency.

The distribution is managed by the Directorate of Food and Nutritional Assistance (DAAN) under the Vice Ministry of Food and Nutritional Security (VISAN), in coordination with Municipal Commissions for Food and Nutritional Security (COMUSAN). A representative from the Office of the Comptroller General also supervises each stage to ensure transparency.

"This action forms part of our inter-institutional commitment to guarantee the human right to food, especially for the country's most vulnerable population," said a spokesperson from MAGA.
