More than 41,000 forest plants have been distributed across several municipalities in Petén as part of an initiative by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA) to support voluntary plantations. The program aims to restore degraded areas and increase forest cover.
The municipalities that received these plants include Flores, San Benito, San José, San Andrés, La Libertad, San Francisco, Santa Ana, Sayaxché, Las Cruces, El Chal, Dolores, Poptún and San Luis.
According to MAGA officials: "The initiative promotes community participation in protecting the natural environment and encourages sustainability and restoration of local ecosystems."
MAGA is also strengthening its Model for Deforestation-Free and Low-Emission Livestock Farming by working directly with cattle farms to implement sustainable practices.
As part of this effort, the distribution of forest plants continues for the establishment of silvopastoral systems. The department has set a goal to distribute a total of 200,000 plants.
