Last week, two tilapia ponds in Santa Rosa, located in Rincón Gigante, San Juan Tecuaco, and El Arenal, Taxisco, were lined with geomembrane as part of a pilot plan to promote tilapia farming. The project aims to improve productivity and provide better conditions for fish management.

The initiative is coordinated by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA) through the Vice Ministry of Food and Nutritional Security (VISAN), with support from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

The work involved preparing the pond surfaces, leveling the ground, and installing a geomembrane liner. This material is described as resistant and flexible, serving as an impermeable barrier to prevent leaks and ensure better water control. The installation process included carefully spreading the membrane over the walls and bottom of each pond, securing the edges, and checking that it was properly fitted.

Before this phase began, participating families received training on key topics for starting tilapia production. The instruction covered how to identify suitable sites for building ponds, prepare land, install water systems, manage fish health and nutrition, and follow basic procedures to support optimal tilapia growth.

The project was carried out jointly with VISAN field professionals and rural agricultural extension workers from Santa Rosa. These teams provided technical assistance throughout all stages of implementation.

A total of 15 ponds are planned for installation and lining in Santa Rosa department under this program. The goal is to help families strengthen their ability to manage and produce tilapia within their own spaces.
