The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA) has announced its readiness to support families interested in starting aquaculture projects, with a focus on tilapia farming. The ministry has technical staff available across the country to assist new producers.

Through its Municipal Rural Extension Agencies (AMER), MAGA extension workers provide comprehensive guidance so that producers can learn efficient and sustainable methods for cultivating tilapia. Interested individuals are encouraged to visit their nearest departmental MAGA office to receive information and support for launching their projects.

To participate in training and receive technical assistance, farmers are advised to have access to suitable land—ideally about 50 square meters that is flat and accessible—as well as a reliable water source, preferably running water without the need for pumping. Being an active member of a Learning Center for Rural Development (CADER) is also recommended for ongoing technical support.

During the training sessions, technical staff cover both theoretical and practical aspects such as pond construction and maintenance, fish management from stocking through growth stages, disease prevention, nutrition, cost management, and commercial guidance for product sales.

MAGA highlights that tilapia is a valuable protein source that can help improve food security while creating economic opportunities for families and communities. "If you are interested in learning and starting your own project, we invite you to approach the departmental MAGA office and request guidance. The technical and professional staff are ready to accompany you step by step in implementing your family aquaculture project," stated the ministry. "MAGA, through the Directorate of Fisheries and Aquaculture Regulation (DIPESCA) and the Directorate of Livestock Development, works to strengthen aquaculture in Guatemala."
