The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA) is monitoring 71 municipalities from November 14 to 17 due to rainfall and low temperatures that could affect crops such as pastures, vegetables, and coffee. The analysis is based on forecasts from the National Institute of Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology (INSIVUMEH), with special attention given to regions including Huehuetenango, San Marcos, Quiché, Totonicapán, and Quetzaltenango.

According to bulletin number 91 issued by the Directorate of Geographic Information, Strategy and Risk Management (DIGEGR), daytime conditions will remain cool with moderate to strong north winds and intermittent drizzle in the North, Northern Transversal Strip, and Caribbean regions. Cold nights are expected in the Western Highlands and Central Highlands.

Municipalities expected to be most affected by low temperatures include Chiantla, Todos Santos Cuchumatán, Tacaná, Nebaj, Totonicapán, and San Carlos Sija.

In response to these weather conditions, MAGA recommends protecting cold-sensitive crops such as leafy vegetables and young plants using tunnels or thermal blankets or through controlled nighttime irrigation. Farmers are also advised to avoid chemical applications during strong winds to prevent drift. For livestock in high-altitude areas, energy supplementation is recommended along with providing shelter or windbreaks for young or weak animals.

Soil moisture maps indicate that much of the agricultural territory has levels below 25 percent. This situation increases water stress for vegetable crops when combined with low temperatures. Only Petén and Alta Verapaz have higher soil moisture levels; farmers there are encouraged to keep drainage systems clean to prevent flooding.

MAGA continues constant monitoring in at-risk areas. Producers can access interactive maps and consult the full bulletin through MAGA’s digital platform at maga.gob.gt or at departmental offices.
