The Isla de Flores in Petén has been officially designated as a “Pueblo Pintoresco” following the completion of actions outlined by the Instituto Guatemalteco de Turismo (INGUAT). The announcement was made after meeting the necessary criteria set out in INGUAT’s roadmap for the program.
The “Pueblo Pintoresco” initiative, led by INGUAT, aims to highlight, conserve, and revitalize towns and historic centers with significant natural and cultural features. According to INGUAT, eligibility for this recognition requires not only visual appeal but also commitment from local authorities and civil society. Criteria include cleanliness, improved traffic flow, landscaping of green areas, regulation and implementation of signage, and the establishment of a tourist security program.
INGUAT provided ongoing technical support to help improve the image of Isla de Flores. Efforts included supplying paint for facade renovations on prioritized streets as identified by the municipal tourism planning office. As part of INGUAT’s project “Arte y turismo, un país con más color,” murals depicting local nature and culture were created at the Centro Universitario de Petén (CUDEP) to welcome visitors.
Initially, nine towns were nominated for their distinctive characteristics under this program: San Juan del Obispo in La Antigua Guatemala (Sacatepéquez), Livingston (Izabal), San Cristóbal Totonicapán, Quetzaltenango city, Salcajá (Quetzaltenango), Santa Catarina Palopó (Sololá), Zacapa city, Estanzuela (Zacapa), and Isla de Flores (Petén). Of these nominees, Estanzuela and Isla de Flores have now achieved official recognition as Pueblos Pintorescos in Guatemala.
