A training session was held for nurses and health technicians from the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance (MSPAS) in the department of Retalhuleu. The event was organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA) through its Nutrition-Sensitive Agriculture component. The aim was to enhance knowledge about responsible use and production of medicinal plants.
David Bámaca, a nutritionist at MAGA, led the session. He provided guidance on how to establish gardens with medicinal plants, taking into account the strong cultural ties that rural Guatemalan communities have with natural medicine.
During the training, participants learned that cultivating medicinal plants requires proper management, preparation, and dosage to ensure their effectiveness. Traditional methods of preparation were also discussed, including infusions, decoctions, maceration, compresses, poultices, and baths.
The initiative is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen coordination between MAGA and MSPAS. It seeks to promote practices that combine ancestral knowledge with food and nutrition education for the benefit of Guatemalan families’ health and well-being.
"This activity strengthens inter-institutional coordination between MAGA and MSPAS by promoting practices that combine ancestral knowledge with food and nutritional education for the benefit of Guatemalan families' health and well-being," according to a statement from organizers.
