Regional workshops are ongoing in Jutiapa as part of the development of Guatemala's National Fire Policy. The latest session, called the Southeastern Regional Workshop for Building the Problem Tree, brought together participants from Jutiapa, Jalapa, and Santa Rosa.

The event was coordinated by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA) and is part of a participatory process aimed at promoting comprehensive and sustainable fire management in agricultural, forestry, and environmental systems across the country.

During the workshop, attendees worked on developing a "Problem Tree," a methodological tool designed to identify causes, effects, and challenges related to fire use. This work followed guidelines set by the Secretariat of Planning and Programming of the Presidency (Segeplan).

Participants included municipal governments, community leaders, producer organizations, public institutions, civil society groups, and international cooperation agencies. The gathering created a space for dialogue and collective construction of solutions tailored to local realities.

Technical support was provided by MAGA professionals from the Directorate of Geographic Information, Strategy and Risk Management (DIGEGR), as well as from the Directorate of Planning. These teams facilitated participatory methodology and analysis of territorial information.

According to organizers: "The National Fire Policy seeks to coordinate inter-institutional efforts to prevent, manage and reduce negative impacts from fire while strengthening resilience in rural communities and protecting natural resources against climate change."

MAGA plans to continue this process with another regional workshop for Central Region scheduled for November 13 in La Antigua Guatemala, Sacatepéquez. Representatives from Chimaltenango and Escuintla will also take part.
