The Universidad Rafael Landívar has announced the launch of three new degree programs at its Campus P. Antonio Gallo Armosino, S.J. in La Antigua Guatemala. The new academic offerings include a Bachelor’s Degree in Legal and Social Sciences, a Bachelor’s Degree in Education Specialized in Mathematics and Physics, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Education for Innovation and Transformation.
The announcement was made during the VIII International Congress “Relations between Latin America, the Caribbean, and Europe.” The university stated that these additions align with its goal to integrate knowledge, research, and education relevant to the region.
In his opening speech, Father Miquel Cortés Bofill, S.J., rector of the university, said: “Every time a degree program is opened, it is an act of courage to promote the right to education, especially for young people,” emphasizing that these new academic offerings represent a firm step toward “building a hopeful future.”
He also highlighted the importance of training competent citizens committed to public service who are able to bring justice where there is injustice and set a path of hope for the country.
Mariana Quezada, director of the campus in La Antigua, described this launch as “an act of hope,” saying it responds to regional educational needs and reaffirms Landívar’s commitment to “create bridges for learning, bringing light where there is darkness.” She added that these new educational programs are an unforgettable journey for the Landívar community guided by Ignatian values.
Dr. Julio César Cordón Aguilar, dean of the Faculty of Legal and Social Sciences, said that launching this law degree aims to train ethical jurists committed to the country. He explained that their academic model focuses on four main areas: human rights; democracy and rule of law; ethics; and applied research—pillars intended to ensure excellence and social responsibility.
“Our distinctive mark,” he said, “is comprehensive training through competency-based methodology, active research participation, and international accreditation that guarantees quality and relevance.”
Dr. César Montenegro from the Department of Early Childhood Education presented two new degrees designed for teachers or graduates from teaching programs. These allow students to earn their bachelor’s degree within two years using an innovative approach. In their first year they will complete a University Diploma in Educational Leadership for the 21st Century—a program aimed at developing leaders capable of inspiring others and leading community-impact projects. “We need educators who positively influence others—who innovate and transform their environment with knowledge, creativity, and commitment,” he said.
The university indicated that these new programs strengthen its mission to develop competent individuals who are aware of social issues while being compassionate and consistent with their values.
The Campus P. Antonio Gallo Armosino was established in 1968 serving communities in Sacatepéquez and Chimaltenango with diverse academic offerings across several faculties including Humanities; Political & Social Sciences; Health Sciences; Economic & Business Sciences—and now Legal & Social Sciences as well. The campus’ integration into Sistema Universitario Landivariano (SUL) enables students’ participation in national/international programs as part of their professional development.
With these additions Universidad Rafael Landívar reiterated its commitment to education as a tool for social transformation rooted in Ignatian values aiming at building more just communities.
