A team of students from Universidad del Valle de Guatemala (UVG) has unveiled a new electric vehicle that will represent Guatemala and Central America at the Shell Eco-marathon 2026. The competition is set to take place at the Motor Speedway in Indianapolis, United States. Prior to this, the car underwent successful tests at Autódromo Pedro Cofiño.
The Taq Balam project began in UVG’s Department of Chemical Engineering and now brings together students from various academic backgrounds. Sixteen active students are part of the team, focusing on improving aerodynamics, weight, and efficiency for their electric prototype.
Key leadership roles include Adriana Novoa as administrative leader, Emanuel Sandoval as technical leader and driver, Estuardo Castillo overseeing the electrical system, and Pablo Orellana responsible for prototype development.
The shift from a combustion engine to an all-electric model marked a significant change for the project. Emanuel Sandoval commented on his involvement: “Since 2023 I have been supporting the replacement of ethanol use with electric energy.” The team's goal is to achieve energy consumption below 1 kW while completing a minimum distance of 16 kilometers.
To meet these requirements, the team redeveloped the vehicle entirely—starting with design plans, moving through 3D modeling, and finishing with assembly. The new body uses polycarbonate fiber and carbon fiber.
Track testing was conducted in September 2025 at Autódromo Pedro Cofiño in Escuintla. Estuardo Castillo highlighted the importance of real-world trials: “We wanted to see it run on a track and get results on power, efficiency, and test it on several circuits.” During these tests, they reached speeds of 32 km/h using 1000 W of power.
Adriana Novoa reflected on her experience: “I have enjoyed all the experiences and new opportunities that a research project brings. Being part of this project I have created a network of contacts and participated in competitions, courses, and congresses where I learn much more.”
Estuardo Castillo noted personal growth through teamwork: “I believe that interaction and leadership make you develop differently.” Emanuel Sandoval pointed out challenges such as maintaining consistency within the team across semesters and managing high costs associated with advanced materials.
Securing sponsors has been crucial due to material expenses. Companies including Fibra Fina and Alfredos have supported development efforts.
