The Universidad Mesoamericana de Guatemala has entered into an academic cooperation agreement with the National Major Seminary of the Assumption, which is overseen by the Episcopal Conference of Guatemala. The agreement was signed by Father Rómulo Gallegos Alvarado, Rector of Universidad Mesoamericana, and Monsignor Rodolfo Valenzuela Núñez, representing the Episcopal Conference.

According to university officials, this partnership aims to strengthen theological education in Guatemala. It is the result of collaboration between the university’s Academic Vice-Rectorate, Faculty of Human and Social Sciences, and the National Major Seminary of the Assumption.

Under this new alliance, Universidad Mesoamericana will provide academic support for theology programs at the seminary. The initial focus will be on a Bachelor’s degree in Theology with a specialization in Pastoral Studies. This program follows guidelines established in the Ratio Studiorum, which sets standards for priestly formation at the institution.

The agreement was approved by all bishops attending a plenary session of the Episcopal Conference of Guatemala. In a joint statement, both institutions expressed their intent “to promote academic excellence, comprehensive training and Christian values within university life.”

In addition to recognizing theological studies academically, this cooperation is expected to create further opportunities for joint work in research projects, teacher training initiatives and educational programs that combine faith with cultural and academic pursuits. Both parties say these efforts are designed to improve educational quality and pastoral preparation for those preparing for service within both church and Guatemalan society.

University representatives noted that this partnership also reinforces Universidad Mesoamericana’s salesian identity and commitment to ecclesial service inspired by Saint John Bosco’s educational philosophy: “This alliance stands as a solid step toward an education that draws from both faith and science to contribute to human and social transformation in our country.”
