The Universidad Mesoamericana in Guatemala marked its 26th anniversary with a visit from Father George Thadathil, SDB, the General Coordinator of Salesian Institutions of Higher Education (IUS). During his stay, Father Thadathil toured both the Central and Quetzaltenango campuses. The visit formed part of a series of commemorative events celebrating the university's more than two decades of educational service.
At a ceremony on the central campus, Rector Father Rómulo Gallegos presented recent institutional developments and renovations. He highlighted the university’s ongoing commitment to academic growth and infrastructure improvement. He also emphasized the work of various faculties within UMES, stating their shared goal is "the comprehensive education of young people in a family environment inspired by the charisma of Saint John Bosco."
A significant event during the celebration was the official launch of Diotima, the university’s new academic journal. This publication aims to foster critical reflection, interdisciplinary dialogue, and promote scientific and artistic thought within the university community. According to university officials, Diotima marks an important step toward strengthening research and intellectual output at Universidad Mesoamericana.
Father Thadathil addressed attendees with a message focused on what he called “the surprise of joy.” Drawing inspiration from authors who celebrate everyday life as a source of spiritual and human inspiration, he said his words were meant "to invite those present to rediscover the sense of joy and hope that should accompany every educational process."
His tour included a visit to Quetzaltenango campus facilities such as dental clinics and medical laboratories, which he noted reflect the institution’s commitment to practical training alongside academic excellence.
University leaders expressed gratitude for Father Thadathil’s visit, viewing it as an affirmation of ties with other Salesian universities worldwide. They described it as reinforcing Universidad Mesoamericana’s dedication to humanistic, scientific, and Christian education.
As Universidad Mesoamericana celebrates its 26th year, officials say they remain focused on their mission: forming professionals who will transform society through faith, reason, and love.
