Cruz Roja Guatemalteca has been working with fire departments to respond to a fatal accident that took place under the Belice Bridge in zone 6 of Guatemala City. The incident occurred on the descent toward Colonia Atlántida, near the Buganvilias cemetery, in an area that presented significant challenges for rescue teams due to limited access and space for emergency vehicles.
According to Cruz Roja Guatemalteca, their teams assisted in the recovery and transfer of approximately 50 bodies from the scene. The remains were first moved to a temporary morgue set up at the accident site before being transported by vehicle to the INACIF morgue in zone 3 of Guatemala City.
To support families affected by the tragedy, Cruz Roja Guatemalteca established two humanitarian aid tents outside the INACIF morgue. These stations provided psychosocial support, pre-hospital care, and spaces for families to reconnect and charge mobile devices during a critical time.
"For more than 20 hours, specialized teams from Cruz Roja Guatemalteca provided psychosocial support to family members affected by the loss of their loved ones. At the same time, pre-hospital care was offered on site, ensuring that relatives had necessary accompaniment," said representatives from Cruz Roja Guatemalteca.
The organization reported that it delivered humanitarian assistance to 249 people related to those who died in the accident. Their response combined immediate medical and emotional care with logistical support for body identification and transfer.
"The coordination between Cruz Roja Guatemalteca, firefighters, and other emergency institutions has been crucial in facing this tragedy, demonstrating the importance of rapid response protocols and inter-institutional collaboration. The institution reaffirms its commitment to supporting the population in times of crisis," stated Cruz Roja Guatemalteca.
The organization encouraged residents to stay informed through official channels and follow safety recommendations issued by authorities. Further information can be found at www.cruzroja.gt or on their official social media accounts.
