An explosion involving fireworks during a public celebration in the central park of Santa María Cahabón left dozens injured on the night of December 3. The incident occurred while a crowd was attending the event, leading to panic and confusion.

Emergency response teams from Cruz Roja Guatemalteca were quickly deployed to assist those affected. Official reports indicate that 31 people with burns and various injuries were transported to the Regional Hospital of Cobán, while others received care at the Permanent Care Center (CAP) in Cahabón.

Cruz Roja Guatemalteca activated its emergency protocols, dispatching six ambulances and 18 rescuers and paramedics for immediate transport and care of the injured. Rescuers described initial scenes of chaos due to the size of the crowd and critical condition of some patients.

“In situations like this, every minute counts. Our team worked quickly to transfer the injured and ensure they arrived at the hospital alive,” said Andrés Lemus, spokesperson for Cruz Roja Guatemalteca.

The organization has coordinated with medical staff at both Cobán’s Regional Hospital, Santa María Cahabón’s CAP, and Guatemala’s Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance.

At 11:20 a.m. on December 3, officials at Cobán Regional Hospital reported that two patients with severe injuries were transferred to Roosevelt Hospital in Guatemala City for specialized treatment.

The use of fireworks is common during year-end celebrations in Guatemala but carries significant risks without proper safety measures. Cruz Roja Guatemalteca called on local authorities, event organizers, and the public to use fireworks responsibly, especially in crowded areas. “This type of tragedy can be prevented with planning and responsibility,” added Lemus.
