Cruz Roja Guatemalteca has led a humanitarian response in the Petén department following Tropical Storm Sara. The organization distributed hygiene and food kits to families in areas most affected by the storm, aiming to address both immediate sanitary and nutritional needs.
In the municipalities of Poptún and Dolores, Cruz Roja Guatemalteca provided hygiene and food kits across 32 communities. This action directly benefited families who lost access to basic resources after the storm. In Dolores, 144 families from Centro Maya and El Toronjo received assistance as an immediate measure to support their recovery. In Poptún, aid reached 178 families in 12 villages and hamlets through coordinated efforts involving trained volunteers who assessed needs and managed logistics in hard-to-reach locations.
Additionally, volunteers from the Petén delegation supported 70 families in Ixcoxol and El Sos communities within Poptún, delivering essential aid to strengthen local resilience.
The operation was carried out with support from strategic partners such as the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance and the European Union. These organizations worked together with Cruz Roja Guatemalteca to ensure timely delivery of assistance.
Beyond distributing supplies, Cruz Roja Guatemalteca also implemented awareness campaigns on hygiene practices and proper nutrition during crises. These initiatives aim not only to meet urgent needs but also to help families build resilience for future challenges.
