On the morning of December 6, 2024, a private aircraft that had departed from La Aurora International Airport and was headed to Quiché Aerodrome crashed during its return while attempting to land in Colonia Santa Fe, zone 13 of Guatemala City. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGAC) reported that the incident took place at around 8:00 am as the plane was in its landing phase.
The airport's emergency plan was activated immediately, enabling a swift response by rescue teams. Personnel from Cruz Roja Guatemalteca, Municipal Firefighters, and DGAC participated in the operation. Three passengers were inside the aircraft; all sustained various injuries and contusions. They were stabilized at the scene before being transported to medical centers for further care. Preliminary information indicated that none of the victims suffered life-threatening injuries.
Cruz Roja Guatemalteca emphasized collaborative efforts with other agencies to ensure rapid and effective assistance. Specialized emergency teams arrived at the crash site to assist with rescue operations, stabilization of those injured, and control of the affected area.
The DGAC also stated: "the departments of Rescue and Fire Extinguishing Services (SSEI) and the Emergency Control Unit of La Aurora International Airport were activated as part of established protocol for such incidents."
This event highlights the importance of interagency preparedness for emergencies and maintaining effective communication among institutions responsible for public safety and care.
