Cruz Roja Guatemalteca has provided humanitarian assistance to 260 people displaced in border communities with Mexico, located in Cuilco, Huehuetenango. The operation was carried out with support from the European Union Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid, Spanish Cooperation, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Guatemala, and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
The aid included essential services to meet the immediate needs of those displaced. Teams from Cruz Roja Guatemalteca offered psychosocial support, pre-hospital care, and distributed supplies such as oral rehydration solutions, purified water, differentiated shelter kits, psychosocial support kits, and wet wipes.
Psychosocial support is a significant component of this response. According to Cruz Roja officials: "Emotional support sessions were provided by professionals to help individuals develop coping strategies and resilience." In addition to emotional assistance, pre-hospital medical attention was given to address urgent health issues and stabilize patients before possible transfer to medical facilities.
Distribution of oral rehydration solutions and purified water aimed to prevent dehydration among displaced persons. Differentiated shelter kits contained clothing and blankets suited for men, women, and children to protect against cold temperatures. Psychosocial support kits included materials intended to reduce anxiety and stress. Wet wipes helped maintain personal hygiene where access to water and soap was limited.
This humanitarian effort highlights the importance of international cooperation in responding to displacement crises. The collaboration between the European Union, Spanish Cooperation, IOM Guatemala, and UNHCR provided resources and logistics necessary for the relief operation.
