Cruz Roja Guatemalteca, together with the Department of Epidemiology from the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance, organized a community-based epidemiological surveillance workshop in Quetzaltenango. The training targeted rural health technicians from all 24 health districts in the department. The initiative received support from the European Union's Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid.
The main aim of the workshop was to train rural health workers to identify, monitor, and respond quickly to disease outbreaks within their communities. During the sessions, participants learned methods for collecting data, analyzing epidemiological information, and developing intervention strategies. They were also given educational resources to help them conduct surveillance activities in their local areas.
According to organizers, collaboration between Cruz Roja Guatemalteca and the Ministry demonstrates how inter-institutional partnerships can improve public health emergency responses. "El apoyo de la Unión Europea ha sido crucial para la realización de este taller, proporcionando los fondos y la experiencia necesarios para su éxito," stated representatives involved with the event.
The program is designed to allow for earlier detection of outbreaks and more efficient response measures. This approach helps contain disease spread while building resilience in communities against future public health emergencies.
Both Cruz Roja Guatemalteca and the Ministry remain committed to improving public health throughout Guatemala. The workshop forms part of a broader effort to equip healthcare professionals and empower communities in addressing communicable diseases.
