The Guatemalan Social Security Institute (IGSS) is marking its 79th anniversary, highlighting its ongoing role in supporting the health and welfare of millions across Guatemala.
The IGSS was established on October 30, 1946, when the Congress of the Republic passed Decree No. 295, creating the institution that has since become a central part of national well-being. The organization was founded with a focus on social justice and human dignity.
Since its inception, IGSS has provided medical care, economic support, and comprehensive protection against risks such as illness, maternity, old age, disability, or death. Over nearly eight decades, the institute has expanded alongside the country by modernizing hospitals, clinics, and care programs. Today it covers more than 3.6 million people—over one-fifth of Guatemala’s population.
In 2024 alone, IGSS delivered over 6.3 million medical services and allocated more than Q4.8 billion in pensions for disability, old age, and survivors.
The Institutional Strategic Plan for 2023–2027 sets out steps toward strengthening and modernizing IGSS. Key developments include new hospital construction projects in Zacapa and zone 5 of Guatemala City as well as expanding workplace clinics throughout the country to bring healthcare closer to workers.
These achievements are attributed to more than 23,000 employees who work nationwide to turn plans into results. The organization continues to focus on prevention and accessible care for all contributors.
"Celebrating 79 years is looking at the past with pride but above all looking at the future with hope. IGSS remains a living legacy—an institution that transforms itself, innovates and advances while maintaining its purpose: to protect those who give life and strength to Guatemala," according to an official statement from IGSS.
