A workshop titled “The Role of Service Chiefs in Support of Breastfeeding” was held at the Hospital de Gineco Obstetricia. The event, organized by the Local Committee on Breastfeeding, aimed to enhance knowledge and strengthen institutional commitment to promoting and protecting breastfeeding.
During the conference, participants discussed how hospitals can achieve the Baby-Friendly Hospital designation. The training session provided an opportunity for medical authorities, service chiefs, and multidisciplinary staff to exchange experiences and learn from each other. Dr. Miguel Ángel Soto, a recognized expert credited with establishing Guatemala’s first Human Milk Bank, participated in the event.
Understanding the nutrients that breast milk provides is considered essential for service chiefs. "We want decision-makers from different professions in the hospital to be able to resolve specific questions, update necessary skills, and understand the topic in order to provide quality care and optimal support to mothers and newborns across various hospital services—even those that may not seem directly related," said Dr. Virginia Flores, deputy coordinator of the Local Committee on Breastfeeding.
The commitment of decision-makers is seen as vital for fostering breastfeeding within the institution. The Local Committee on Breastfeeding and hospital authorities reaffirmed their dedication to continuing educational initiatives and awareness activities that contribute to the well-being of mothers and newborns cared for at Hospital de Gineco Obstetricia. Their goal is to maintain high standards in perinatal care while further encouraging a culture of breastfeeding within hospital facilities.
Dr. Virginia Flores emphasized that these types of training sessions benefit those covered by social security: "These trainings benefit our beneficiaries."
