The Centro de Atención Médica Integral para Pensionados (CAMIP) is marking its 39th anniversary. Each month, the center provides comprehensive medical care to an average of 28,000 patients. Services include physiotherapy, occupational therapy, advanced clinical laboratory tests, medications, and other healthcare support.
CAMIP was established by the Instituto Guatemalteco de Seguridad Social (IGSS) with a focus on specialized care for older adults, who are considered a vulnerable group due to health, social, and economic factors. Dr. Glenda Juárez, acting head of the Medical Directorate, recalled that CAMIP initially operated during afternoon hours at the Policlínica facilities.
In the early 1990s, after the Guatemalan government fulfilled its financial obligations to IGSS, the institution’s financial situation improved. This allowed for the completion of CAMIP’s current facility. The building was received in May 1992 and began offering services two months later.
Today, CAMIP offers medical attention in specialties such as physiatry, geriatrics, cardiology, surgery, gynecology, traumatology, internal medicine, urology, neurology and general medicine. Additional clinics provide psychology, neuropsychology, nutrition services as well as speech therapy and dentistry.
This year saw the introduction of a new X-ray service equipped with modern technology at CAMIP. The new equipment allows for faster diagnoses without requiring patients to travel to other units.
Ana Morales—a retired IGSS social worker—commented: “It is necessary to say that IGSS is an autonomous entity; it is the most solid and important in all Central America.” She added about CAMIP: “For example the pharmacy is now always stocked; we have X-ray services; electrocardiograms; a very efficient laboratory; and above all we have aquatic therapy which is fundamental for physical and mental health of patients.”
Morales also said that she has been treated well by doctors and clinic staff: “The authorities are willing to listen to patients and resolve any issues that arise.”
Patients at CAMIP can participate in clubs focused on diabetes, hypertension, osteoporosis and arthritis management. There is also a therapeutic music group called La Rondalla de CAMIP.
Regular gatherings take place at La Colina de Pamplona where monthly birthday celebrations are held for patients.
“In CAMIP we are committed to providing services with warmth and quality that our population requires,” said Dr. Glenda Juárez.
