The Guatemalan Social Security Institute (IGSS) has completed a series of upgrades at its hospital in Huehuetenango, aiming to improve healthcare delivery for more than 31,000 affiliates and 66,000 beneficiaries in the region.
Key improvements include the introduction of a digital queue system in Outpatient Consultation, Pharmacy, and Admissions areas. This system is designed to streamline patient flow and reduce waiting times. The hospital has also installed information screens, ambient speakers, and audio amplifiers to enhance communication with patients during their visits.
Additionally, new kiosks have been set up to provide information and manage appointments efficiently. The Outpatient Consultation area underwent comprehensive remodeling that features ergonomic benches, air conditioning, expanded service windows, and air curtains for a more comfortable environment.
The Pharmacy section was expanded and general signage improved to ensure smoother service. A new data center with high-capacity cabling and 45 security cameras was also established to support medical services' efficiency and continuity while enhancing safety for both users and staff.
At the formal inauguration of these upgrades, José Adolfo Flamenco Jau, president of the IGSS Board of Directors, toured the renovated facilities alongside other officials. In his remarks he stated: “El Seguro Social trabaja para que cada afiliado reciba atención con calidad, respeto y calidez; cada avance refleja nuestro compromiso con la salud y el bienestar de los guatemaltecos.” (“Social Security works so that each affiliate receives care with quality, respect and warmth; each advance reflects our commitment to the health and well-being of Guatemalans.”)
According to IGSS representatives, these changes are part of an effort to implement a more modern model of care that combines technology with improved service standards for families in Huehuetenango.
