Adopting healthy lifestyle habits can play a significant role in reducing the risk of breast cancer, according to M.Sc. Andrea Monteagudo Cifuentes, a nutritionist at the Hospital de Gineco Obstetricia. She emphasized the importance of good nutrition, regular physical activity, and maintaining a healthy weight.
Monteagudo Cifuentes explained that attending medical appointments is crucial for early detection and prevention. "Excess body fat, especially after menopause, is the main source of estrogen production in the body. This can stimulate the growth of hormone-sensitive breast tumors," she said regarding the link between obesity and breast cancer risk.
She recommended a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats while limiting processed meats, sugary drinks, and refined foods. Regular exercise was also highlighted as essential. The nutritionist advised aiming for "at least 150 minutes per week of moderate aerobic activity since exercise acts as a natural regulator of hormonal and inflammatory systems."
Additionally, she advised avoiding tobacco use because even secondhand smoke exposure can increase risk.
In Guatemala, being diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer can result in treatment costs up to 910% of a household's monthly minimum wage income, based on data from the Actuarial and Statistical Department (DAE). This underscores how small changes in diet and increased physical activity may help lower breast cancer risk.
While it is not possible to completely prevent breast cancer, adopting a healthy lifestyle remains vital. The Instituto Guatemalteco de Seguridad Social (IGSS) supports this approach by offering preventive services and comprehensive care for its members.
