The Hospital Modular at Unidad Periférica Zona Once has started offering therapeutic exercise sessions for patients. The program is part of an effort to provide more comprehensive and active care.

Two physical medicine doctors and four licensed physiotherapists work at the hospital, supporting the new initiative. The physiotherapy team organizes daily one-hour sessions for patients in Intermediate Care, Surgical, or Critical Areas who are able to leave their beds. These activities aim to help patients clear their minds and move their bodies as much as possible.

Dr. Alejandro Ávila, a physiatrist at the unit, explained: “The objective is to maintain functional abilities, support occupational therapy, promote interaction with other hospitalized patients in order to avoid depressive episodes, delirium or anxiety.”

Between 10 and 15 patients participate in each session under the guidance of professionals who adapt exercises according to individual needs.

“Group activities help patients leave their modules and interact with each other; the results have been positive in their response to treatment for different conditions,” said Dr. Ávila.

One patient, Ingrid Flores, was admitted for surgery after a motorcycle accident. She expressed gratitude for the specialized care she received: “It is very entertaining and nice. After spending all day lying down without much movement—honestly I have been hospitalized before and it is not very common to do these stretches,” she said.

The hospital’s approach reflects a growing recognition that recovery involves more than medication alone.
