The Guatemalan Social Security Institute (IGSS) has added 35 new ambulances to its medical network, aiming to improve emergency response and healthcare services throughout the country. The vehicles were presented during a formal ceremony attended by IGSS officials, including José Adolfo Flamenco Jau, president of the Board of Directors, and Edson Javier Rivera Méndez, general manager.
The event also included submanagers, medical directors, representatives from the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), and staff from various areas of social security. Keys to the ambulances were symbolically handed over to representatives from several medical units.
Carlos Alberto Franco, deputy manager of Planning at IGSS, stated that this acquisition is "the result of planned and efficient management aimed at ensuring prompt medical response for those insured." He emphasized that the initiative will benefit IGSS members by strengthening emergency capabilities.
Nathalie Teatin, head of UNOPS Program Management Office in Guatemala, said she was pleased with the technical support provided during the process. She highlighted "the transparency and institutional cooperation that characterize these types of projects."
The new ambulances are expected to enhance medical attention at different IGSS units across Guatemala. Francisco Javier Godínez Jerez, deputy manager for Health Benefits at IGSS, officially handed over keys to units such as Santa María Cahabón’s Comprehensive Assignment Unit in Alta Verapaz and the Gyneco-Obstetrics Hospital. These facilities will now have improved resources for emergencies and healthcare delivery.
In his closing remarks, President Flamenco Jau expressed gratitude to all involved teams: “When you have plans with clear objectives, efforts materialize, building day by day an IGSS closer to you.”
With this addition to its fleet, IGSS continues its effort to modernize social security and provide more effective healthcare services in Guatemala.
