The Instituto Guatemalteco de Seguridad Social (IGSS) is promoting proper handwashing as a key measure to protect public health. Hand hygiene is considered essential in preventing the spread of viruses, bacteria, and other disease-causing agents.
Edwin Damián, a professional nurse at the Los Amates Clinic in Izabal, emphasized the importance of correct technique: "If it is not done properly, we are more exposed to common but potentially dangerous infections."
According to IGSS, effective handwashing can prevent diarrheal diseases, gastrointestinal and respiratory infections. It also helps avoid infection of open wounds by stopping contact with harmful microorganisms. The process requires water, soap, and a clean towel for drying. There are at least ten recommended steps to ensure all areas—such as between fingers, palms, backs of hands, and under nails—are cleaned thoroughly.
Damián noted that education on hygiene should begin early: "Education in hygiene is key to reducing communicable diseases and fostering a culture of prevention in the community." He added that reinforcing this habit at home, school, and work is important.
Data from the Actuarial and Statistical Department (DAE) shows that by June 2025 more than 117,000 IGSS beneficiaries had been treated for diarrhea and gastroenteritis—conditions largely preventable through good hand hygiene. In response to these figures, IGSS continues to encourage proper handwashing among its members and the wider population as an important preventive measure.
