The Guatemalan Social Security Institute (IGSS) has launched a new program to extend social security benefits to Guatemalans living abroad and their families. The initiative, established under Board Agreement 1543, is part of the institution's Strategic Plan for 2023-2027 and aims to broaden IGSS coverage to more productive sectors.
Through this voluntary enrollment program, eligible participants can access several benefits. These include a lifelong monthly pension upon reaching age 60 and completing 240 contributions, a survivor’s pension for beneficiaries in Guatemala amounting to 50% of the insured person's average monthly income, and a funeral allowance for beneficiaries residing in Guatemala.
According to IGSS, "With Agreement 1543, compatriots abroad have the great opportunity to access Social Security services. With this program, a unique opportunity was opened so that Guatemalan migrants, no matter where in the world they are, and their families can secure a future and access IGSS benefits."
Migrants who enroll will be able to combine new contributions with any previous payments made during their employment period in Guatemala. The required contribution is Q1,000 (one thousand quetzales), which can be paid monthly, quarterly, semiannually or annually through direct deposit at IGSS offices by relatives or by debit or credit card.
This program provides an option for Guatemalans abroad to maintain ties with the national social security system and ensure support for themselves and their families.
