Each year on December 7, Guatemala observes the traditional "Quema del Diablo" celebration. During this event, fireworks and loud noises are common, which can cause stress and fear in pets such as dogs and cats.
The Animal Welfare Unit (UBA) of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA) has issued a reminder to pet owners about the risks associated with the festivities. The UBA emphasizes that pet owners should be alert for signs of nervousness or distress in their animals and take preventive steps.
The recommendations provided by UBA include keeping pets indoors in a secure area with doors and windows closed to reduce noise exposure. Owners are also advised to stay with their pets during periods of intense noise to offer reassurance. It is important that all pets wear identification collars with a name tag and contact number in case they escape due to fright.
Additionally, pet owners should ensure that fireworks are kept out of reach to prevent ingestion or injury. Animals should also be kept away from areas where there is smoke or burning material to avoid respiratory issues or poisoning.
According to UBA, these measures help prevent accidents and protect animal welfare during the celebration, encouraging responsible participation in the tradition.
